Down the sticks..

The best part about Killarney was that I got to have some alone time. It was fabulous just being able to switch off, close the door on the outside world and have some me time. At first I felt a little guilty because I figured that I was on vacation in a place I hadn't been before so shouldn't I be out sightseeing? Then it occured to me hey I'm on vacation, if I want to stare at the wall for two days thats my choice! I particularly liked my holiday companions. At first I was a bit worried about going away with two couples. I worried about wheter they would be all coupley and love dovery. I worried about what they thought of me, even though they invited me did they actually think I would accept? I worried about what other people thought (hey there's the single girl trying to fit in with the couples, freak). Looking back though they were the perfect holiday companions. I didn't once feel awkward around them and its not like they were going out of their way to include "the single one".
When we got there on the Saturday, the first order of business was checking in. I fully expected that the single room I had booked would be tiny, rather like one of those monk cells but with a brush and hoover in the corner. Ha, I was pleasently surprised to discover that my lovely cosy room contained a huuuge queen sized double bed. Further inspection of the couples rooms discovered I had the biggest bed. Apparently a double room meant a bog standard double bed and a single bed and a single room meant a slightly smaller room but a fuck off huge bed. Yay! Of course I refused all offers of swapping and we headed down to the bar where we whiled a few hours away eating and drinking. The girls decided to dump the boys on a pub crawl and we did a spot of shopping. We wandered around the town for a few hours before coming upon a shop that specialised in ice cream, milkshakes and crepes. Cheap they were not. Two milkshakes and orders of crepes came to twenty four euro (close to thirty us dollars) but oh sweet jeebus they were the best crepes and milkshakes evah!
We headed back to the hotel got showered and decked out and headed back out for more food in a so so resteraunt. The service was poor and rude mannered, the menu was dissapointing and there was a very irritating buzzer which went off whenever any of the staff went into the kitchen. Of course we were sat in the table closest to the kitchen. Oh yes, they also ran out of chicken (whaaa?). We left as soon as our food was eaten choosing not to linger over coffee. We decided after our traumatic meal that we would head back to our hotel bar. The music that night was trad which is always good for getting the feet tapping. There was a good crowd there and we got lucky and got seats near the pool table. We whiled away the night with copious amounts of alcohol and playing increasingly bad pool. I decided to call it a night about 2am and apparently the others left at 3.
I spent the next afternoon blissed out in bed watching crap tv, reading magazines, listening to music and dozing. At some point I was brought breakfast in bed which I devoured and then went back to sleep. One of the couples texted saying they were heading out shopping and did I fancy it but no way was I leaving the luxury of my seomra leabha! That was the nice part about the weekend, we could check in and see what everyone was up to and decide wheter or not we wanted to partake. God bless mobile phones! I crawled out of the pit at 3 in the afternoon where we all met down in the bar and decided a roast dinner was in order. Cue a three course meal and more drinking. We took our leave of the bar about 6.30 and decided to go for a nap (shut up we were on hols). A few hours later after napping and getting ready we reconvened in one of the couples rooms where we watched top gear (one of my favourite programmes) and then headed out.
We opted for chinese food this time and although everyone elses food went down well, mine was disappointing. The vegeterian spring rolls had pork in them. My general ming chicken appeared to just be deep fried salty chicken with a flavourless corn starch sauce. The dessert (orange sorbet) and the tsing tsao beer made up for it though! We went to the bar beside the hotel and enjoyed a few more drinks (hey we're irish) but one of the girls was fading fast and decided to head to bed. Her hubby walked her up and the remaining threes of us figured it would just be a quiet night until he reappeared brandishing shots! We stayed til the bar closed then headed back to our hotel bar where we drank the night away til 4.30am we staggered to bed. Our train left at 12 and C being the big mammy that she is woke us at 10.30 to make sure we were packed. After more breakfast in bed I staggered down to reception to checkout and we trudged to the train station. Two uneventful train rides and I finally got home and fell into the leabha.
One of the things about this weekend that was so nice was that I got on with everyone. The two girls I have been friends with for years but the boys were so funny and nice and thoughtful. I felt I got to know them a bit better. Another thing that struck me was that I only seem to pine for a boyfriend when I'm a bit tipsy. Seeing them give each other kisses and cuddles did leave me with a bit of a pang but I realised that I should continue to hold out until I meet a guy that lives up to my expectations. This is what my friends have done and seeing them so happy gives me hope that maybe one day that will be me. In the meantime I'm slowly coming to enjoy my singleness. Bring on more hols!
