God I'm relieved. It's been a quiet little corner of hell sitting with my feelings about my choice not to bring the cats to the vet for several years - not out of indifference, but because groceries for my human child took priority over taking apparently healthy cats in for a check-up -- let her teeth degrade to the point they are at. I know if I had taken her in sooner it wouldn't necessarily have solved anything, because I wouldn't have had money for dental work then either, even if it was less than it will be at this stage. There wasn't any there there, there was no money for vets, or pet insurance, or even wet food or dental treats. Welfare: It's Not Very Much Money. But that's all intellectual stuff, and on top of it is the emotion of looking at your suffering cat and not being able to explain anything to them and feeling pretty awful.
ANYWAY. Grateful that the dental surgery is going to happen, even if it hits the higher estimate they gave me, and depending on how the last of the campaign goes, I might be able to get a preventative cleaning in for Sam.

Wrote that and immediately the vet called! Sam's labwork came back and he probably has heart failure; the echocardiogram is now urgent instead of nice-to-have for eventual dental work, and that dental work is now on the backburner in favour of getting a diagnosis and treatment plan for his heart. Dohhhh. Raised the goal amount. Although still in pretty good shape; with what's already been raised I was able to say yes to the echo right away instead of "I'll call you back when (if) I have the money." That part was amazing.

Thinking about about my filk days of yore lately: John would have turned 75 (!) on the 16th, and Kathy Mar recently passed away at 75. That one took me by surprise somehow, even though apparently she'd been in and out of hospital for a couple years now. I have drifted largely out of contact with the filk community, and it's been somewhat intentional because I can't make music or listen to music anymore (other than my recent but temporary drug-induced listening spree!) (okay that sounds like a weird hallucinatory rampage instead of the reality, which is me, in bed, trying not to move my head too much, listening to filk records at a quiet volume.) ...so reading about conventions and concerts and stuff is just kind of painful, and I'm happier if I let that be a happy memory instead of an open wound, if that makes sense. But it meant I didn't get the word of mouth about Kathy. (I have since enlisted a few filk pals to drop me a line about major news about filkers I know/knew but am not in regular contact with, to stop this from happening again.)
I'm not sure I would have heard anyway, because communicating with Kathy was always a bit complicated. The last time I visited her house (for Scrabble! She was a Scrabble shark. I beat her one game out of three and felt SO proud) we arranged the time by her telling the roommate of a friend to tell the friend to tell me to email her housemate to ask them to tell her. We both had cell phones, but the grapevine felt more intuitive to her very social/hippie brain I think.
She was a great pal of John's, and was one of the people who comforted me the most when he died unexpectedly. The con right after his death where we were going to be Interfilk guests, only it turned out it was me solo as an Interfilk guest, was part of her and Dean's big roadtrip in 2009, and they did some sherpa-ing of the Brooke vs. John album that we had just finished making, and she sang "A Healing in this Night" at me. I won't say for me, because when she sings that song, as she would at some point in most all-night filk circles, there were always a lot of people in the circle who felt particularly touched by it, I think. But also I cried into her shoulder in the hallway for a while and she gave me her cell number and said "Call day or night. I wake up easily and in a good mood." I never called (...including when we were arranging Scrabble...) but I kept the number in my wallet for years afterward. Later she showed me a song she was writing about John, including a part about being happy he introduced me, specifically, to filk. I think I may have discouraged her from finishing it by immediately crying on her shoulder again while she said "Oh, no, I wasn't trying to make you sad..." but the song muses are fickle, so who can say. It touched the hell out of me in draft form.
If there's an afterlife, I hope she's basking in the presence of her son Michael. If there's not, and we live on only in the hearts of our loved ones, I know she's got as big a slice of that pie as anyone can.
Gosh, Michael. John didn't write many songs, but one of them was a very short setting of a Shel Silverstein poem, Somebody Has To. (It goes on "..go polish the stars.") Her late son used to have a little mime act where he would polish stars, and Kathy would often request that John sing this for her because it reminded her of Michael. Usually at 4 in the morning, which is great for short songs. "It's time to switch to AM radio!" Kathy would announce, because short songs are better for keeping everyone awake until breakfast.
Anyway. Bittersweet memories. Mostly sweet. Two strange, kind people who made my life better and weirder and have now moved on.
